Need a break in France to get away from the daily routine? Go to Lorraine and discover a fascinating region of France, packed with hidden treasures and curiosities of all kinds. Lorraine is in north-eastern France and consists of four départements, Moselle, Vosges, Meurthe-et-Moselle and Meuse.
It was in Lorraine, during the First World War, that the Battle of Verdun took place. Best known for this historical heritage, Lorraine has more than one string to its bow when it comes to delighting tourists during a short break or a longer holiday in France. It has a major religious heritage, renowned spas, winter sports resorts, dozens of castles and monuments such as the fortress of Châtel-sur-Moselle, the Fort de Vaux or the Tour de la liberté Lorraine also includes the beautiful city of Metz with its picturesque pedestrianised centre and its new Pompidou Centre. This city, whose charm is little known, is easily accessible from the sea port of Dieppe via the A4 motorway. Only 470 km of road separates you from Normandy.
For walking and green tourism, Lorraine offers many hiking opportunities for visitors in search of clean air, forests and lush green plains. There are many tourist circuits. Among the most delightful, is the lovely valley of Thur.
