Aquitaine lies in southwestern France and is one of the most popular regions of the country for tourists. It has five départements: the Dordogne, Gironde, Landes, Lot-et-Garonne and Pyrénées-Atlantiques. The easiest way to get to Bordeaux, capital of the Aquitaine region, is to take the A28 and A10 motorways for nearly 610 km from the ferry terminal at Caen.
Ideal for exploring over a weekend or a longer stay, the area offers an amazing diversity of landscapes. From the Landes pine forests to the vineyards of the Médoc, the peaks of the Pyrénées to the harvests of Gascogne, the stretches of sand of the Dune du Pyla to the prehistoric caves of Lascaux, not to mention the Ways of Saint Jacques de Compostela, Aquitaine is a land of contrasts. Each département has its capital, history, heritage and even sometimes its own language.
The area is incredibly well preserved. Natural areas account for more than half the area of the Aquitaine region.
An ideal region for taking leisurely bike rides, enjoying the ocean and tasting world renowned specialities: foie gras, oysters and the wines of Bordeaux. Gastronomy, heritage, traditions, leisure … In Aquitaine, holidays are packed with new things to discover!
